City of Stirling Top Fifteen Group

The Top Fifteen Bowling Competition Est. 2002

Run for all members within the clubs within the District Nine Area

City of Stirling Top Fifteen History
Up until 2002 the Sports Council in Stirling had been running a Top Fifteen Competition for the Bowling Clubs within the Stirling Area (District Nine). In 2002 they said they were dropping the said competition, Peter M. Black approached them and asked if he could run it this year to keep it going, Peter asked A. Deans to help and sent letters out to to all the clubs within the district nine area and eight teams agreed to enter for the first "City of Stirling Top Fifteen Competition". The eight teams paid a £10 entrance fee and the now late Mr Willie Jenkins donated £40. It was agreed that all money be paid out to the winners and runners up.
It was agreed to ask Neil Nairn  & Alan Davidson both from Dunblane Bowling Club, to come on to the committee, both agreed and the first full meeting was held to draw up the rules and constitution for the group. With the first final played at Polmaise Bowling Club between Polmaise Bowling Club and Causewayhead Bowling Club, with Polmaise the first winners. At the presentation Mr Pat Martin of Causewayhead said that he would ask if his work Cooperative Funeralcare would sponsor the competition.
Letters were sent out to all clubs within the district nine area inviting them to enter the 2003 competition. There were fifteen clubs wishing to enter.
At the second committee meeting it was agreed that all clubs that play in the competition would have the chance to host a final. Polmaise had the first and Dunblane would host the second. A draw was made with all other teams and once a club host the final they go to the bottom of the list and so on.
It was noted that Mr P. Martin had spoken with his manager and he had agreed to sponsor the Competition with £150. this along with the entrance fee of (£10 per club) £300. The committee agreed that all money should still be paid out and that the only expense any club should have is the entrance fee. this would mean that the prize for the first year was £80 to the winners and £40 to the runners-up, it would now be £200 and £100. It was also agreed that at each Final the sponsor would be asked by the committee to make the draw for the following year. As the sponsors were not present at the time it was agreed to meet with P. Martin and Mr Carty of the Co-operative Funeralcare to finalise the sponsorship and make the draw for 2003. The committee agreed to sell spot the teams to raise £200 for a new trophy with the "City of Stirling Top Fifteen" and Crest on it. Polmaise being the first winners would have their name on it.
The 2003 final was held at Dunblane Bowling Club between Dunblane Bowling Club and Polmaise Bowling Club with Dunblane coming out on top. As the Sponsors were not present Mrs Black and Mrs Deans made the draw for the 2004 with the final being held on Cambusbarron Bowling Green.
The 2004 final was a close encounter between Causewayhead Bowling Club and Polmaise Bowling Club, with Causewayhead coming out on top. Cambusbarron Bowling Club laid on a small tea for the finalists, which the committee thanked them for. As it is the committees view that no club should be out of pocket in holding the finals. The committee had lettered Stirling Bowling Club asking if they wished to join the group. Stirling declined saying that the rule stating a club failing to have a full team would loss 2 points and 8 shots for each tie. As they did not have a under junior they would 2 points and 8 shots from the start.
Mr Carty and Mr Martin of Co-operative Funeralcare along with the president of Cambusbarron Bowling Club made the draw for the 2005 Competition. The final would be held on  Doune Castle Green and again was between Causewayhead Bowling Club and the holders Polmaise Bowling Club with Polmaise coming out on top this time. The committee again invited Stirling Bowling Club to join and again they declined. The sponsors and the President of Doune Castle  made the draw for 2006 competition. with the final to be played at Airthrey Spa Bowling Club.
For the third time it would be contested between Causewayhead Bowling Club and Polmaise Bowling Club. This time Causewayhead took the honours and were champions for 2006.
At the 2006 Final A. Davidson and the president of Airthrey Spa made the draw for 2007. At the presentation Mr Black informed the body of the hall that Mr. N. Nain was withdrawing from playing bowls and from the committee of the Top Fifteen Group. Mr. Black thanked Mr. Nairn for all the work on the committee and wished him well on his move to Bo-Ness. Mr Pat Martin was asked if he would serve on the Top Fifteen Committee which he agreed. for the 2007 competition we had a new member club in Stirling Bowling Club, this brings the total number of clubs taking part in the Top Fifteen to 16. In 2007 the competition saw an new sponsor come on board. the being Onestop Motor Engineers  of Stirling. The competition was held on Causewayhead Bowling Green, with Polmaise looking for their third victory over the last six years reaching the final six out of six. Their opponents being Bannockburn Bowling Club their first time in the final. But Polmaise proved the more determined to win and came out on top. With the two sponsors and the entrance money the prize money 2007 was beaten semi-finalists £75 each Runners-up £150 and the winners £300. The draw was made for 2008 and a new member club in Kippen Bowling Club joining the group.
in 2008 the final was change from a Friday night to a Sunday due to the light failing at this time of year. So with a 2.00p.m. start at Bridge of Allan Bowling Club the 2008 final got underway with Borestone Bowling Club and waiting to meet them again Polmaise Bowling Club. This looked to be a close games as both teams were to meet again the following week in the County Top Ten Final also. But it proved to be a one sided affair with Polmaise Bowling Club winning 12 points to nil.
the 2009 final saw Polmaise Bowling Club going for their third win in a row, up against them were Spittalmyre Bowling Club. Polmaise proved to strong and took their third straight championship, their fifth in total. on Riverside Bowling Green. The 2010 final was held at Borestone Green and again Polmaise were there to take part in a new challenge  from Cambusbarron Bowling Club. This proved to be a very close encounter with six points each, it was down to shots with Polmaise winning with 2/3 shots to spare.

In 2011 the Group saw Mr A. Deans withdraw from the committee and Mr Tommy Hood of Stirling Bowling Club stepping on as the fourth member of the committee. Callander Bowling club hosted the final between Polmaise Bowling Club and Spittalmyre Bowling Club, on what was a very wet day but for all the rain that fell the green held up well. Polmaise again came out on top with 8 points to 4 points win giving them their their 5 win in succession. Mr Davidson, P. Martin and the president of Callander made the draw for 2012 with the final to be held on Bannockburn Green.
The 2012 final again saw Polmaise Bowling Club and Spittalmyre Bowling Club challenge for the trophy, this time it was a convincing win fr the Polmaise team with a 10 points to 2 points victory. P. Martin A. Davidson and the Bannockburn President made the draw for the 2013 competition. the 2013 competition saw the loss of one of the sponsors in "Onestop Motor Engineers" who had sponsored the competition for 6 years, The group would like to thank them for their sponsorship over the years. A new sponsorship for this years competition was found in "Dogzone" from the back of the hill in Stirling. This years final was played on Balfron Bowling Clubs Green on their 100th anniversary and The City of Stirling Top Fifteen Group presented their president Mr G. Gourlay with gift to mark the occasion. The final saw Polmaise Bowling Club play Causewayhead Bowling Club, with Polmaise winning their 7th title in a row. The Sponsors and the president of Balfron made the draw for 2014.
In 2014 Sponsors Dogzone" pulled out and with thanks to Mr T. Hood who arranged a new sponsor with "Harvie Tyres Limited" with Mr Sandy Hope. The Final was held on Spittalmyre Green between Polmaise Bowling Club and Dunblane Bowling Club with Polmaise comming out on top for 8th year winning their 10th title over the 13 years of the competition. This year also saw the member club donate £100 to a local charity "So Precious". the draw was made by P. Martin A. Davidson and the Spittalmyre President for the 2015 Competition.
2015 final was to prove one of the best ever and it was between Borestone Bowling Club and Polmaise Bowling Club on Livilands Bowling Green. Polmaise won the sen. singles and Borestone cancelling it out with the same score 21-8 in the junior singles, with the score at 6 pts. to 4 pts for Borestone . It came down to the last bowl in the triples, Polmaise 7 up with 4 shots against them and the Borestone skip with the last bowl to take out a bowl and stay for a draw and the cup. to the delight of Polmaise players he failed and the scores were 6 points each with Polmaise winning with 3 shots.

2016 will see a new name on the trophy with Stirling beating Polmaise in the first round with a score of 8 - 4, bringing to an end 14 years appearances in the finals and winners 9 years in a row. we also say a sad fare well to "Harvie Tyres Ltd" and Sandy Hope as Sponsors with Sandy retiring, we thank him and wish him all the best in his retirement. on the 14th August 2016 Stirling Bowling Club played Borestone Bowling Club last years runners-up and hoping to lift the trophy for the first time. They got off to a great start with the singles winning 21-16 but the juniors  singles finished 21-18 win for Stirling, Borestone took the triples with a last end win finishing 12-11, but Stirling took the pairs, rink and senior rink to win 8 points to 4 points on their home green. P. Black, P. Martin and the president of Stirling Bowling Club made the draw for 2017.
2017 see the Competition final return to the start at Polmaise Bowling Club after a successful 15 years and visiting all the member clubs. To start hopefully a new and successful round of the clubs, with a new sponsor on board in "J.W. Builders Ltd".
After 15 years and all clubs having held a final we are back at the start, Polmaise were the first final was held. This year the final is between Cambusbarron Bowling Club and Polamise Bowling Club. the last time they meet in the final was back in 2010 at Borestone, with Polmaise winning. Again Polmaise came out on top wining 10-2 which did not do justice to Cambusbarron as all games were close. J. McCabe from "J.W. Builders Ltd" and A. Davidson made the draw for the 2018. In the 2018 sees committee member P.Martin leave the "Co-operative Funeralcare Service" to move to "Anderson Funeral Directors" of Callander and in doing so , we have a new sponsor and we thank the "Co-oerative Funeralcare" for their sponsorship over the years and welcome "Andrew Anderson and Sons"  on board.
2018 also sees Polmaise being again knocked out in the first round by Doune Castle Bowling Club. The final being held at Dunblane Bowling Green and on the day the heavens opened up. The final was between the 2016 finalists Borestone Bowling Club and Stirling Bowling Club. with Stirling winning on that day. Borestone Bowling Club runners up in 2008,2015 and 2016. The game was held over for one hour to see if there was a break in the weather. Starting at 3.00p.m. it looked as if we were going to have a draw in in points, when Borestone took the lead in four of the ties and hold on till the end and winning their first City of Stirling Top Fifteen Trophy. The draw for 2019 was made by P.Martin, P. Black and the President of Dunblane Bowling Club.
The start of 2019 season so the sudden passing of committee member Mr Alan Davidson, Alan was a member of the committee since 2003 as treasurer giving it up due to work load in other committees (Scottish, County and Dunblane Bowling Club). We will all miss Alan dearly, R.I.P. dear Friend.
The 2019 Final was held at Cambusbarron bowling Green on the 13th August between Causewayhead B. C. and  Doune Castle B.C.. This was the first time Doune Castle had reached the final in it 17 year history and made their mark on a wet and rainy Cambusbarron green with a 10 -2 victory only losing out in the senior rink. the single being 12 - 5 down came back to win 12 -21. the junior singles was the match to watch with both players leading at some point but with the Doune castle player leading 20 -15 to be pulled back to 20 - 20 and game against him with the last bowl to come trailing the jack back to win 21 -20.
